Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) are working on an “immigration reform” bill. That’s great news, right? We need reform in immigration because the status quo is just not cutting it anymore.
However, the first pillar of this bill would be a “biometric Social Security card” From a Washington Post article written by Sen. Schumer himself:
“Our plan has four pillars: requiring biometric Social Security cards to ensure that illegal workers cannot get jobs; fulfilling and strengthening our commitments on border security and interior enforcement; creating a process for admitting temporary workers; and implementing a tough but fair path to legalization for those already here.”
In fairness, he did say that:
“Each card’s unique biometric identifier would be stored only on the card; no government database would house everyone’s information. The cards would not contain any private information, medical information or tracking devices. The card would be a high-tech version of the Social Security card that citizens already have.”
However, if you believe that the government will not later decide to change this as “threats” grow or some other sort of emergency comes about, then I have some ocean front property in Arizona to sell you.
Two days ago, President Obama met with Senators Schumer and Graham and then praised the proposed bill as “a promising, bipartisan framework which can and should be the basis for moving forward.”
Remember, a couple of weeks ago, President Obama, in an interview aired on “America’s Most Wanted,” expressed his belief in police departments taking DNA from everyone upon arrest, regardless of conviction or charges. He said:
“It’s the right thing to do. This is where the national registry becomes so important, because what you have is individual states — they may have a database, but if they’re not sharing it with the state next door, you’ve got a guy from Illinois driving over into Indiana, and they’re not talking to each other.”
A national DNA registry on anyone arrested, regardless of conviction or even being charged, is unconstitutional, plain and simple.
Lest you think I only pick on the democrats, I was just as upset when President Bush implemented a law in 2006 requiring DNA samples to be taken from all people arrested on federal charges, again, without any conviction of an offense.
